The blatant ignorance regarding women still not being safe or the lack of equality and existing patriarchal norms is rather painful to watch, especially when &#8220;Men suffering due to legislations enforced in favour of women&#8221; is making headlines. I am talking about the Bengaluru Techie&#8217;s suicide case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is alarming to witness such incidents in India, where a man decides to take his life, believing that the justice system is tailored for women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"key-questions-raised\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_Questions_Raised\"><\/span>Key Questions Raised<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is it a wake-up call to protect men and their rights? yes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is it a reminder to stop protecting women? No<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"historical-context-of-women-centric-laws\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Historical_Context_of_Women-Centric_Laws\"><\/span>Historical Context of Women-Centric Laws<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, presently more than half of India does not agree with this point, and I believe it all roots down to the lack of knowledge of why laws were legislated in favour of women in the first place. These laws were drafted because the society back then was patriarchal in nature\/male-dominated society. It was necessary to ensure that women are not violated, subjugated by men or feel unsafe to pursue their dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"present-era-realities\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Present_Era_Realities\"><\/span>Present Era Realities<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Has this scenario changed in the present era? Yes, it has. Women are in a better place; however, not all of them. There are still grey areas in this regard. If they are allowed to pursue their dreams, then they are sexually abused in their workspace. To this date, women do not feel safe walking alone at night on the streets, no matter how well-lit they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ongoing-challenges\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ongoing_Challenges\"><\/span>Ongoing Challenges<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sexual abuse in workplaces<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of safety in public spaces<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Persistent societal inequalities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"legal-deficiencies-and-misuse\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Legal_Deficiencies_and_Misuse\"><\/span>Legal Deficiencies and Misuse<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>But then, it is high time for lawmakers to observe the deficiency in these laws, where women take advantage of men and their inability to be protected from the same. It is high time for the authorities to understand how men are often abused in this regard and what can be done to ensure their discontinuity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Times have changed, wherein men are often made victims of false rape or abuse cases, they are asked to pay exorbitant amounts to their spouses, they are sexually abused, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"areas-of-concern\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Areas_of_Concern\"><\/span>Areas of Concern<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Issue<\/th><th>Description<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>False Allegations<\/td><td>Men are often made victims of false rape or abuse cases<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Financial Burden<\/td><td>Exorbitant financial demands in marital disputes<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Lack of Protection<\/td><td>Inadequate legal safeguards for men<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"need-for-balanced-legal-framework\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Need_for_a_Balanced_Legal_Framework\"><\/span>Need for a Balanced Legal Framework<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The authorities have to formulate norms that balance the patriarchal setup where women are still subjugated, with the drawbacks in the legislation that fail to protect men against abuse due to laws favouring women. The judiciary has to be very alert and thorough in this regard, ensuring that women and men do not end up being exploited by the laws and the Constitution that are supposed to safeguard their rights and lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"shared-responsibility-and-way-forward\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shared_Responsibility_and_Way_Forward\"><\/span>Shared Responsibility and Way Forward<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I do not want to suggest that men be on their guard because that equals asking women to stay home, neither of which is a long-term solution. For women&#8217;s safety, the burden is on the men to act in a dignified manner and not discriminate, creating a secure space.
