Although a single hair may appear insignificant, it can provide valuable information to forensic investigators. Hair analysis helps investigators determine whether a hair belongs to a human or an animal, identify the body area from which it originated, and sometimes establish a link between a suspect, victim, and crime scene. The scientific study of hair is known as trichology, and it plays an important role in forensic investigations.

Table of Contents

Toggle

Introduction

Structure of Hair

2.1. A typical hair consists of three main parts:

2.1. Root

The root is the part of the hair embedded in the skin. Examination of the root can reveal whether the hair was naturally shed or forcibly removed.

2.2. Shaft

The shaft is the visible portion of the hair above the skin. It contains important characteristics used in forensic examination.

2.3. Tip

The tip is the end of the hair. It may be natural, cut, broken, or damaged, providing clues about grooming habits or the method by which the hair was separated.

Internal Structure of Hair

The hair shaft consists of three layers:

3.1. Medulla

The medulla is the innermost layer of the hair. It may be continuous, fragmented, or absent. In animals, the medulla is usually wide and occupies more than half of the hair diameter. In humans, it is generally narrow and occupies less than one-third of the diameter.

3.2.
