The dog follows the scent trail left by the suspect and may lead investigators to a person, location, or object connected with the crime. The dog’s ability to identify a scent is based on its superior olfactory system and intensive training.

However, the evidence provided by a tracker dog cannot be accepted blindly. The police officer or handler who works with the dog must appear before the court and explain the dog’s training, experience, reliability, and past performance. Courts generally require independent evidence to support any conclusions drawn from dog tracking.

Legal Value of Dog Tracking Evidence

Dog tracking evidence is considered relevant and admissible, but courts treat it with caution. The evidence is not regarded as equal to scientific evidence such as blood, DNA, or chemical analysis. Since dogs are living creatures capable of making mistakes, their actions may sometimes be misunderstood or misinterpreted by handlers.

The Supreme Court of India, in Abdul Razak v. State of Maharashtra (AIR 1970 SC 283), held that the evidence of a tracking dog and its trainer is admissible. However, such evidence is not ordinarily given substantial weight and cannot be placed on the same level as scientific expert evidence.

Guidelines for Accepting Dog Tracking Evidence

Courts have laid down certain conditions for relying on dog tracking evidence:

A complete and reliable record must be maintained regarding how the tracking was conducted.

The tracking report or panchnama must be clear, accurate, and properly proved.

The handler’s testimony must be consistent with the written record.

The handler must successfully withstand cross-examination.

Information regarding the dog’s training, experience, reliability, and previous achievements should be presented before the court, preferably supported by documents.

If these requirements are satisfied and the dog belongs to a recognized tracking breed with proven training, the evidence may carry considerable value.

Canine evidence must be assessed under the same principles as other forensic disciplines, with emphasis on reliability and corroboration rather than absolute certainty, ensuring its proper role within modern forensic science.

Limitations of Dog Tracking Evidence

Despite their usefulness, sniffer dogs have certain limitations:

Dogs can make mistakes.

Handlers may misunderstand the dog’s signals.

Incorrect interpretations may be drawn from the dog’s behavior.

Scientific knowledge about the exact process through which dogs identify and track scents is still limited.

There is always a possibility of human error, misrepresentation, or deception.

For these reasons, courts generally avoid basing convictions solely on dog tracking evidence and prefer corroboration through other forms of evidence.

Skills Required in Forensic Dogs

Dogs used in forensic and law-enforcement work must possess several important qualities:

Excellent health and physical fitness.

Strong sense of smell.

High stamina and endurance.

Intelligence and trainability.

Ability to remain focused and obedient.

Sociability with humans and other dogs.

Capability to travel and work in different environments.

Ability to perform agility exercises and follow commands accurately.

Handlers must also be physically fit, capable of interpreting the dog’s behavior correctly, and committed to continuous training and learning.

Why Dogs Are Effective Investigators

Dogs possess an extraordinary sense of smell. Humans have approximately five million olfactory receptor cells, whereas a bloodhound may have 220–300 million receptors, depending on breed. This enables dogs to detect scents that humans cannot perceive.

People constantly leave behind tiny particles of skin, hair, sweat, and body oils. Dogs can identify these scent traces and create what is often called a “individual scent profile” or “human scent signature.” They can distinguish between different scents and often track a specific individual even in areas containing numerous other odours.

The bloodhound is the most famous tracking dog breed and has been used for tracking humans since the sixteenth century. However, no single breed is ideal for every situation. Some mixed-breed dogs also perform exceptionally well as trackers.

A tracking dog follows a scent trail until it locates the target. Once it identifies the object, person, or location associated with the scent, it alerts its handler through a trained behavior such as barking, sitting, or adopting a specific posture.

Types of Forensic and Police Dogs

Type

Role

Narcotic Detection Dogs

These dogs detect illegal drugs at airports, borders, railway stations, and other locations. The Court held that the evidence given by a tracker dog and its handler is admissible in court. However, such evidence cannot be equated with scientific expert evidence such as blood analysis, fingerprint examination, or chemical testing. The Court observed that a dog’s behavior may involve uncertainty and the possibility of error; therefore, dog-tracking evidence should be treated with caution and should ordinarily be supported by other reliable evidence.

Gade Lakshmi Mangraju v. The court pointed out that mistakes may occur either on the part of the dog or its handler, and there is always a possibility of misunderstanding or incorrect interpretation of the dog’s behavior. The Court further noted that scientific knowledge regarding the exact abilities that enable dogs to identify and track suspects is still limited. Consequently, the Court emphasized that dog-tracking evidence should not be heavily relied upon unless it is corroborated by independent and trustworthy evidence.

Vishnu v. The use of a dog squad is simply one of the many investigative techniques available to the police and does not, by itself, affect the credibility of the prosecution case or the identification of the accused.

These judicial decisions establish that while tracker and sniffer dogs can be valuable aids in criminal investigations, the evidence obtained through them is primarily corroborative in nature. Courts generally do not treat dog-tracking evidence as conclusive proof of guilt and require it to be supported by independent evidence before placing substantial reliance upon it.

Canine Forensics in the United States

Canine forensics—the use of trained dogs for scent detection, tracking, and identification—has played a significant role in American law enforcement. U.S. courts have recognized the value of canine evidence, particularly in drug detection, search and rescue, and criminal investigations. However, case law reveals a cautious approach: while dogs can establish probable cause, courts demand proof of reliability, certification, and corroboration.

In modern forensic science, the importance of validation, certification, known error rates, and handler bias is paramount, as these factors critically determine the reliability, credibility, and admissibility of forensic evidence.

Supreme Court Recognition

Florida v. Courts balance investigative utility with constitutional safeguards, ensuring that canine evidence supports justice without becoming its sole foundation.

Conclusion

Canine forensics represents a powerful blend of instinct and science, aiding law enforcement in detecting narcotics, explosives, firearms, electronic devices, cash, wildlife products, and even human remains. While their extraordinary olfactory skills make them invaluable investigative partners, courts in India and the United States—through cases like Abdul Razak v. State of Maharashtra (1970) and Florida v. Harris (2013)—have emphasized that dog evidence must be corroborated and cannot stand alone as conclusive proof.

Modern safeguards such as certification standards, digital chain-of-custody systems, and probabilistic reasoning enhance credibility, ensuring canine evidence is responsibly integrated into the broader framework of justice. Ultimately, police dogs should be seen as supportive tools that guide investigations and strengthen corroboration, while courts balance their utility with caution to uphold fairness.

The Critical Role of Canine Units in IED Detection: Capabilities, Challenges, and Strategic Integration

Supreme Court Orders Removal, Shelter of All Stray Dogs in Delhi-NCR Within Eight Weeks

Feeding Free-Ranging Dogs In Streets Or Public Places Outside Designated Areas Will Face Legal Action; Supreme Court

Supreme Court Stray Dog Judgement 2026: Euthanasia, Public Safety & Constitutional Balance Explained

Supreme Court on Stray Dogs: Public Safety, ABC Rules & Legal Implications (January 2026)

Introduction Canine forensics refers to the use of specially trained dogs in criminal investigations.
