What is unusual is when an electoral defeat is followed by a serious internal challenge to the party leadership itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The West Bengal situation, therefore, deserves to be examined not merely as a story of defections, factionalism, or political opportunism. It should be examined as a case study in <strong>political leadership, organizational design, succession planning, and institutional resilience<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My assessment is that Mamata Banerjee&#8217;s principal weakness was not a lack of authority. It was, paradoxically, <strong>too much concentration of authority around the leadership and too little institutional independence within the party<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A political organization can be extremely effective when its leader is powerful. But the real test of an organization comes when that leader loses governmental power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is where the TMC crisis becomes particularly instructive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-election-defeat-and-the-internal-crisis-are-two-different-problems\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Election_Defeat_and_the_Internal_Crisis_Are_Two_Different_Problems\"><\/span>The Election Defeat and the Internal Crisis Are Two Different Problems<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first mistake would be to treat everything that happened as one single problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2026 West Bengal Assembly election produced a major electoral setback for the Trinamool Congress. According to the Election Commission results, the BJP won 207 of the 294 Assembly seats, while TMC won 80. The BJP secured approximately 45.84% of the vote, and TMC approximately 40.80%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These numbers are important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TMC did not become an insignificant political force. TMC Became Too Closely Identified With Mamata Banerjee<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mamata Banerjee is unquestionably the central political personality of the Trinamool Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That has been one of TMC&#8217;s greatest strengths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her personal credibility, political communication, mass appeal, and ability to mobilize voters helped transform TMC from a relatively new political organization into the dominant political force in West Bengal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the same strength can become a weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a party becomes too closely identified with one leader, a subtle transformation takes place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The organization begins to depend on the leader for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Political legitimacy;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Candidate selection;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conflict resolution;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strategic direction;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Appointments;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Succession;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communication with senior leaders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, members may become loyal to the <strong>person<\/strong> rather than to the <strong>institution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction becomes visible only when the leader loses power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Mamata Banerjee was Chief Minister and TMC controlled the government, there was little reason for anyone to challenge the structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the election defeat, the incentives changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly the question became:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What does remaining inside the organization provide to a politician who no longer has the protection of governmental power?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is where institutional weakness becomes dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-strong-leadership-is-not-the-same-as-strong-institution\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Strong_Leadership_Is_Not_the_Same_as_Strong_Institution\"><\/span>2. Strong Leadership Is Not the Same as Strong Institution<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an important difference between a strong leader and a strong political organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strong leader can make quick decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strong institution can survive bad decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strong leader can win elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strong institution can survive losing elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strong leader can settle disputes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strong institution can prevent disputes from becoming destructive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TMC appears to have been extremely strong in the first category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2026 crisis raises questions about the second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lesson is not that Mamata Banerjee should become weaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lesson is that <strong>the organization around her should become stronger<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objective should be<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mamata should lead the party without becoming the entire institutional structure of the party.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-3-the-succession-question-was-never-properly-institutionalized\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_The_Succession_Question_Was_Never_Properly_Institutionalized\"><\/span>3. The Succession Question Was Never Properly Institutionalized<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every political party eventually faces the succession question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is not necessarily<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Who will replace Mamata Banerjee tomorrow?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more important question is<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;What is the process by which TMC will choose its future leadership?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rise of Abhishek Banerjee naturally created a potential answer to that question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a succession plan based primarily on personalities is fragile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A durable succession system should tell party members:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who can contest for leadership;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who votes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What qualifications are required<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How candidates are evaluated;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How disputes are resolved;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How the leadership can be changed;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What role the founder or senior leader retains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If those rules are unclear, succession becomes a political contest between individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And once that happens, factions become inevitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-4-candidate-selection-may-have-created-hidden-resentment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Candidate_Selection_May_Have_Created_Hidden_Resentment\"><\/span>4. Candidate Selection May Have Created Hidden Resentment<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most interesting aspects of the 2026 election was the scale of candidate changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TMC reportedly dropped dozens of sitting MLAs and changed candidates across many constituencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From an electoral perspective, this can be entirely rational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A party facing anti-incumbency may decide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We need new faces.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But politics is not mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A politician who has spent years building a constituency network may feel personally rejected when denied a ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the party does not provide a transparent explanation or an alternative political role, that politician does not necessarily disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The network remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The supporters remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The local workers remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And resentment remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This produces what I would call a <strong>political shadow <\/strong>organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officially, the politician may no longer be part of the leadership structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unofficially, the politician may still possess:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Loyal workers;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Local influence;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Community relationships;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Elected representatives;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Financial networks;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personal supporters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That network can become extremely important after an electoral defeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-5-the-missing-institution-was-a-grievance-mechanism\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_The_Missing_Institution_Was_a_Grievance_Mechanism\"><\/span>5. The Missing Institution Was a Grievance Mechanism<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A healthy organization needs a place where people can disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This sounds simple, but it is one of the hardest things to create in politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If an MLA cannot tell the leadership:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I disagree with this decision.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without being considered disloyal, the disagreement does not disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It moves somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually it may become:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Private conversations \u2192 Faction \u2192 Collective bargaining \u2192 Rebellion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is precisely why political parties need institutional channels for dissent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objective should not be to eliminate disagreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should be to <strong>institutionalize disagreement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mature political organization should be able to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;You are free to disagree with the leadership. You are not free to destroy the organization.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction is essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-6-tmc-may-have-confused-loyalty-with-agreement\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_TMC_May_Have_Confused_Loyalty_With_Agreement\"><\/span>6. class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A party leader needs loyalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But loyalty should not mean permanent agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, a leader surrounded only by people who agree with everything is vulnerable to bad information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most valuable MLA is sometimes the person who says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This policy will fail in my constituency.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most valuable district president may be the person who says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The workers are unhappy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most valuable strategist may be the person who tells the leadership:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The public mood has changed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If such people are ignored, the leader eventually receives only filtered information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And filtered information is one of the greatest dangers for a political leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 system for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Leader \u2192 Organization \u2192 Candidate \u2192 Campaign \u2192 Voter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But political organizations also require another system:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Member \u2192 Grievance \u2192 Discussion \u2192 Mediation \u2192 Decision \u2192 Acceptance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first system helps win elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second system helps prevent internal collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A modern political party needs both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-a-new-way-forward-tmc-2-0\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\"
