This is my vote.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>If the second answer describes our voting behaviour, then perhaps we need to rethink something fundamental about Indian democracy.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Because <strong>your vote belongs to you\u2014not to a political party.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>A political party can ask for your vote.<\/p>\n\n  <p>A political candidate can earn your vote.<\/p>\n\n  <p>But neither should receive your vote automatically.<\/p>\n\n  <h2 id=\"the-person-you-send-to-parliament-matters\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Person_You_Send_to_Parliament_Matters\"><\/span>The Person You Send to Parliament Matters<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n  <p>A political party does not sit in Parliament.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Its symbol does not stand up and speak during a parliamentary debate.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Its symbol does not study a Bill.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Its symbol does not question a minister.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Its symbol does not examine the national budget.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Its symbol does not represent your constituency.<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>A person does.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>That person will receive enormous constitutional authority in your name.<\/p>\n\n  <p>So why should we spend hours discussing political symbols but sometimes only minutes thinking about the individual who will actually exercise that power?<\/p>\n\n  <p>This is the central question.<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>If we are entrusting someone with the power to represent us, shouldn&#8217;t we first know who that person is?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <h2 id=\"the-most-powerful-question-a-voter-can-ask\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Most_Powerful_Question_a_Voter_Can_Ask\"><\/span>The Most Powerful Question a Voter Can Ask<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n  <p>Before voting, ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>\u201cIf the party symbol disappeared, would I still vote for this candidate?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>This question is simple, but psychologically powerful.<\/p>\n\n  <p>It separates <strong>party loyalty from personal judgment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Suppose you discover that the candidate has:<\/p>\n\n  <ul>\n    <li>an excellent public-service record;<\/li>\n    <li>integrity;<\/li>\n    <li>competence;<\/li>\n    <li>knowledge of the constituency;<\/li>\n    <li>a clean and transparent record;<\/li>\n    <li>independence from powerful interests; and<\/li>\n    <li>the ability to represent people effectively.<\/li>\n  <\/ul>\n\n  <p>Then vote for that candidate with confidence.<\/p>\n\n  <p>But suppose the candidate has none of these qualities.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Should a symbol alone be enough to persuade you?<\/p>\n\n  <p>That is the question every voter should confront.<\/p>\n\n  <h2 id=\"what-happens-when-we-vote-for-the-symbol\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Happens_When_We_Vote_for_the_Symbol_Instead_of_the_Person\"><\/span>What Happens When We Vote for the Symbol Instead of the Person?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n  <p>This is where the issue becomes much deeper.<\/p>\n\n  <p>When millions of voters automatically vote for a party symbol, the <strong>political party becomes extraordinarily powerful<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n  <p>The candidate begins to understand something very important about his political future:<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>\u201cMy party&#8217;s support may matter more to my career than my personal relationship with the voters.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>Think about the consequences.<\/p>\n\n  <p>If the candidate believes that the party symbol delivered his victory, he may become primarily concerned with:<\/p>\n\n  <ul>\n    <li>keeping the party leadership happy;<\/li>\n    <li>retaining the party&#8217;s confidence;<\/li>\n    <li>securing the next ticket;<\/li>\n    <li>protecting his political position;<\/li>\n    <li>following the party leadership;<\/li>\n    <li>maintaining political relationships; The law. Give us a person whom the public can trust.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <h2 id=\"party-ticket-is-an-opportunity-not-a-guarantee\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" political party should be forced to understand:<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>\u201cOur symbol cannot permanently compensate for a candidate whom the electorate considers unsuitable.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n competence.<\/p>\n\n  <p>A candidate can purchase visibility.<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>He cannot purchase integrity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>He can purchase advertisements.<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>He cannot visibility?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>Again, financial support does not automatically mean wrongdoing.<\/p>\n\n  <p>But concentrated financial dependence can create potential obligations.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Imagine a candidate whose political campaign depends heavily on a small group of powerful individuals.<\/p>\n\n  <p>After winning, he may remember:<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>\u201cThey helped me when I may be personal.<\/p>\n\n  <p>It may be organisational.<\/p>\n\n  <p>And it may influence political independence.<\/p>\n\n  <p>The fundamental question becomes:<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>When a representative has to choose between the public interest and the wishes of a powerful supporter, who should come first?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>The answer should always be:<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>The ticket?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>\u201cIf I disagree with an influential supporter, will it damage my political future?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>These questions can influence behaviour.<\/p>\n\n  <p>This is why <strong>independence should be one of the qualities voters examine before giving someone political power.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <h2 reputations.<\/li>\n  <\/ul>\n\n  <p>Why?<\/p>\n\n  <p>Because <strong>the candidate has to win the voter\u2014not merely carry the symbol.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>This could create a positive an organisation that genuinely helps people.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Such people may not possess enormous political networks.<\/p>\n\n  <p>They may not have powerful godfathers.<\/p>\n\n  <p>They may not have enormous campaign budgets.<\/p>\n\n  <p>But they may possess something far more important:<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>the trust of ordinary people.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>A candidate-merit culture can make that trust politically valuable.<\/p>\n\n  <h2 id=\"we-must-be-careful-with-criminal-allegations\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"We_Must_Be_Careful_With_Criminal_Allegations\"><\/span>We Must Be Careful With Criminal Allegations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n  <p>Candidate scrutiny must also remain fair and lawful.<\/p>\n\n  <p>A person having a declared criminal case does not automatically mean that the person is guilty.<\/p>\n\n  <p>There is an essential difference between:<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>allegation, investigation, prosecution, trial and conviction.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>A democratic society must respect the presumption of innocence and due process.<\/p>\n\n  <p>But that does not mean voters should remain unaware of what candidates have officially disclosed.<\/p>\n\n  <p>The solution is simple:<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>Do not believe rumours. I must decide whether the candidate deserves my trust.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>Instead of:<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>\u201cMy party has won.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>Think:<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>\u201cThe person I elected now has a responsibility to me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>This small change in thinking can have enormous consequences.<\/p>\n\n  <h2 id=\"your-vote-is-not-a-loyalty-card\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Your_Vote_Is_Not_a_Loyalty_Card\"><\/span>Your Vote Is Not a Loyalty Card<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n  <p>A political party should not be treated like a permanent membership card that automatically determines every vote.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Political parties may change.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Candidates may change.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Circumstances may change.<\/p>\n\n  <p>The performance of an elected representative may change.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Therefore, the voter must retain the freedom to judge independently.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Your vote is not a reward for lifelong political loyalty.<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>It is a decision about who should receive public power today.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <h2 id=\"the-final-question-every-voter-should-ask\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Final_Question_Every_Voter_Should_Ask\"><\/span>The Final Question Every Voter Should Ask<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n  <p>Before pressing the voting button, imagine that the party symbol has disappeared.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Imagine there are simply five people standing before you.<\/p>\n\n  <p>No colours.<\/p>\n\n  <p>No flags.<\/p>\n\n  <p>No slogans.<\/p>\n\n  <p>No celebrity campaigning.<\/p>\n\n  <p>No massive advertisements.<\/p>\n\n  <p>No political machinery.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Only their names, their records, their character, their competence and their public service.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Then ask:<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>\u201cWhich person would I trust with the power to represent me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>That is the candidate you should seriously consider.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Then bring the party back into the picture.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Ask:<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>\u201cDoes this person&#8217;s party and its policies also align with my principles?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>Now you are making a genuinely informed democratic choice.<\/p>\n\n  <h2 id=\"conclusion-take-your-vote-back\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion_Take_Your_Vote_Back\"><\/span>Conclusion: Take Your Vote Back<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n  <p>The greatest danger of blind symbol voting is not merely that a weak candidate may get elected.<\/p>\n\n  <p>The deeper danger is that <strong>the political party can become stronger than the voter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n  <p>The candidate may become more concerned about pleasing the party leadership than serving the electorate.<\/p>\n\n  <p>He may worry more about securing the next party ticket than preserving the trust of the people.<\/p>\n\n  <p>He may become dependent upon political patrons or financiers.<\/p>\n\n  <p>And the citizen who gave him the mandate may gradually lose influence until the next election.<\/p>\n\n  <p>We can change that.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Not by eliminating political parties.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Not by rejecting ideology.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Not by telling people whom to vote for.<\/p>\n\n  <p>But by asking citizens to <strong>think before they surrender their judgment to a symbol.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>Let the party compete for your support.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Let the candidate compete for your trust.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Let the candidate&#8217;s record compete with the candidate&#8217;s promises.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Let competence compete with money.<\/p>\n\n  <p>Let integrity compete with political connections.<\/p>\n\n  <p>And ultimately, <strong>let the voter decide.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>Because the party may give a candidate a ticket.<\/p>\n\n  <p>The party may give him a symbol.<\/p>\n\n  <p>The party may give him an organisation.<\/p>\n\n  <p>But there is one thing the party cannot legitimately claim to own:<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>Your vote.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>Your vote belongs to you.<\/p>\n\n  <p>And when you give it, you are not merely selecting a political colour.<\/p>\n\n  <p><strong>You are selecting the person who will exercise public power in your name.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n  <p>Therefore:<\/p>\n\n  <h2 id=\"do-not-vote-merely-for-the-symbol\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CDo_Not_Vote_Merely_for_the_Symbol_Know_the_Person_Behind_It%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>\u201cDo Not Vote Merely for the Symbol.
