people of India decide to change their government, what credible alternative will they actually be offered?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a fundamentally different question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An opposition can be successful at criticising a government and still be unprepared to replace it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can identify problems without having workable solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can promise change without explaining how that change will be financed, legislated and implemented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can unite against one political force without agreeing on what it intends to do once it obtains power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why the real challenge before India&#8217;s opposition for 2029 is not simply to become anti-incumbent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is to become pro-governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India needs a choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a choice becomes meaningful only when the alternative is primarily attacking the incumbent government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or it can use those years to build something considerably more difficult:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A government-in-waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means building policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Testing ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Training administrators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Studying legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calculating costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learning from failures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, above all, demonstrating competence before asking the Indian people for power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question should not simply be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy should India vote against the present government?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The better question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy should India vote for us?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is the question that can produce a genuinely new political choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-this-should-not-be-an-anti-modi-election-strategy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"This_Should_Not_Be_an_%E2%80%9CAnti-Modi%E2%80%9D_Election_Strategy\"><\/span>This Should Not Be an \u201cAnti-Modi\u201d Election Strategy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let me make one point clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A credible alternative to the present government cannot be built merely around opposition to Narendra Modi, the BJP or any particular ideology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That would be too narrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Modi years have produced developments that any serious political assessment must acknowledge, including the expansion of digital payments, infrastructure development, welfare delivery, financial inclusion and India&#8217;s more assertive international profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An opposition that refuses to recognise achievements simply because another political party delivered them will immediately weaken its own credibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But acknowledgement is not surrender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mature democracy must be capable of holding two thoughts together:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis worked.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow it is fundamentally defective, replace it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objective should not be to erase the previous government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p will appear in the manifesto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not what will generate applause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What will actually happen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-questions-that-separate-political-opposition-from-an-alternative-government\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India has no shortage of speeches, manifestos and political promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What it needs is an alternative operating system for governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-build-the-government-before-asking-for-the-government\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Build_the_Government_Before_Asking_for_the_Government\"><\/span>Build the Government Before Asking for the Government<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This should become the central philosophy of the opposition&#8217;s preparation for 2029:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not wait until after the election to learn how to govern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prepare before the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research before the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cost policies before the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legally examine them before the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Test them before the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Identify implementation difficulties before the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where possible, demonstrate results before the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-proof-before-promise\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Proof_Before_Promise\"><\/span>Proof Before Promise<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That principle could change the character of Indian opposition politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of merely announcing what it intends to do, the opposition could demonstrate that it has already thought through how it will do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-create-an-india-100-problems-mission\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Create_an_%E2%80%9CIndia_100_Problems%E2%80%9D_Mission\"><\/span>Create an \u201cIndia 100 class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objective would not be to create 100 political slogans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It would be to identify 100 genuine national problems and investigate each one systematically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They could include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>youth employment;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>wages and income security;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>agricultural productivity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>education and learning outcomes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>healthcare costs;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>judicial delays;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>police investigation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>criminal justice;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MSME financing;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>urban congestion;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>air pollution;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>water security;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>manufacturing competitiveness;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>energy security;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>women&#8217;s workforce participation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>municipal finances;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>government procurement;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>artificial intelligence;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>technology adoption;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>infrastructure maintenance;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>administrative accountability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every problem should be approached with evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How many people are affected?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What does the problem cost India?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What has already been attempted?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What worked?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What failed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why did it fail?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What would fixing it cost?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What law needs to change?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which ministry or agency must act?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How long will implementation take?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are the risks?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And finally:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How will success be measured?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result would be much more valuable than another conventional manifesto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It would become a national problem-solving database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-every-promise-should-carry-a-price-tag\" C<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the financial mathematics do not work, the promise should not be made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is nothing politically weak about withdrawing an unrealistic proposal before an election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, it demonstrates responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A government that discovers after taking office that its promises cannot be financed has already damaged public trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A political party should therefore be willing to tell voters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe The numbers do not work. ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a BJP-era programme works, keep it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a Congress-era programme works, keep it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a regional government&#8217;s programme works, learn from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good governance should not carry a party label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Indian taxpayer does not care which party originally designed a successful public service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The citizen cares whether it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-real-test-of-an-alternative-government-jobs\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the opposition wants to convince India&#8217;s young population that it deserves power, employment should be one of its central tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the employment debate also needs greater sophistication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of jobs alone is not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We should ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What does the worker earn?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is the employment sustainable?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does productivity increase?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can the worker acquire new skills?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does the family achieve greater economic security?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person working extremely long hours for inadequate income cannot simply be converted into a favourable employment statistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objective should be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-productive-dignified-and-sustainable-work\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Productive_Dignified_and_Sustainable_Work\"><\/span>Productive, Dignified and Sustainable Work<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An alternative government should therefore publish measurable employment targets and explain exactly how it intends to achieve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-justice-must-become-a-national-economic-priority\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a lawyer, I would place judicial reform considerably higher on the political agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Justice delayed is not merely a legal problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is an economic problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a social problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is an institutional problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is also a constitutional concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Court delays affect businesses, families, victims, accused persons, property disputes, commercial contracts and government litigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An alternative government should therefore move beyond the familiar promise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will modernise the judiciary.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sentence means very little without measurable commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How many judicial vacancies will be filled?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How much court infrastructure will be created?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How will case management improve?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How will unnecessary government litigation be reduced?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How will investigation and prosecution be strengthened?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How will technology be used intelligently?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How will disposal times be measured?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The principle is simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-governance-begins-when-slogans-become-numbers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most useful reforms the opposition could adopt is an institutional Red Team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its job would be to attack the party&#8217;s own policies before the public does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose the proposed government announces a \u20b950,000-crore employment programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Red Team should try to destroy the proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Where will the money come from?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will it actually create productive employment?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can the states implement it?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can businesses exploit it?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can beneficiaries manipulate the system?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Could it increase inflation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Could it displace existing workers?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What happens during an economic downturn?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What happens if corruption enters the programme?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What happens if the expected economic benefits never materialise?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A policy that survives serious adversarial examination has a much better chance of surviving contact with reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not merely a political concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It comes from engineering, risk management and adversarial testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indian politics needs more of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-publish-the-day-one-government-manual\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" a written governance framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who will lead the government?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will ministries be allocated?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What policies are common?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What policies remain within individual party autonomy?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will disagreements be resolved?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What happens when coalition partners disagree publicly?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will fiscal discipline be maintained?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will major legislation be agreed upon?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What happens if a coalition partner withdraws support?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These questions should be answered before power arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The country should not be forced to discover a coalition&#8217;s governing arrangements after the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of it as a public balance sheet of government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And there should be one important rule:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scorecard must also judge the alternative government when it comes to power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it fails, the public should be able to see the failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is the price of asking citizens for trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-a-government-should-be-allowed-to-admit-failure\" dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In reality, honest admission of failure can strengthen democratic trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citizens do not expect governments to be perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They should expect governments to be honest, accountable and capable of correction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 government contract with the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-new-political-currency-should-be-credibility\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" better?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who attracts larger crowds?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who dominates television?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who creates the strongest narrative?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of those things matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there should be another question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who can demonstrate that their government is capable of working?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That requires a different political culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A culture that respects economists without becoming technocratic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawyers without becoming legalistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Administrators without becoming bureaucratic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technology without becoming obsessed with technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And citizens without treating them merely as voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ultimate political asset should be credibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-india-can-become-a-laboratory-of-governance\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"India_Can_Become_a_Laboratory_of_Governance\"><\/span>India Can Become a Laboratory can also be an enormous advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different states are already experimenting with different approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If one state develops an effective education intervention, study it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If another develops a successful healthcare model, study it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If another improves municipal services, study it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If another creates a stronger MSME ecosystem, study it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can this be reproduced elsewhere?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India could become a laboratory of governance innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every experiment will succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A controlled pilot that fails after spending a relatively limited amount is preferable to a national programme that fails after thousands of crores have been spent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objective should be to fail intelligently before scaling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-would-success-look-like\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Would_Success_Look_Like\"><\/span>What Would Success Look Like?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The success of a new opposition project should not primarily be measured by rallies, social media followers or television appearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should be measured by class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These indicators would tell the country far more than the size of a political rally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-can-this-defeat-the-bjp-in-2029\" advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elections depend on countless variables:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>economic conditions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>leadership;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>national security;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>international developments;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>political alliances;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>candidate selection;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>public sentiment;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>regional dynamics;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>unexpected events.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone claiming certainty about the result of the 2029 election is offering confidence where none can responsibly exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But one thing can be controlled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opposition can control whether its alternative is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>prepared,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>competent,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>financially credible,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>legally sound,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>institutionally serious and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>capable of explaining exactly what it intends to do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is where its energy should go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-opposition-must-become-more-than-opposition\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It must question government.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It must scrutinise legislation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It must expose failures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It must represent citizens.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It must hold power accountable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But an opposition that wants to become the government has another responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It must demonstrate that it is capable of governing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a fundamental difference between saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe government is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHere is what we believe is wrong. Here is the evidence. Here is what should be retained. Here is what should change. Here is what it will cost. Here is the law required. Here is how it will be implemented. And here is the number by which you can judge us.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second is not merely opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is an alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-india-does-not-need-another-election-promise\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"India_Does_Not_Need_Another_Election_Promise\"><\/span>India Does Not Need Another Election Promise<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India is too large to be governed through slogans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is too young to have its aspirations reduced to political arithmetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is too diverse to be governed through simplistic solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it is too important to accept untested promises from anyone seeking power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The country does not need politicians merely saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGive us a chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It needs political leaders capable of saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have done the work.
