This was the highest number since 2016. The figure stood at 561 in 2023 and 564 in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trial courts continue to award death sentences. In 2025 alone, 128 people were sentenced to death. However, many death sentences do not ultimately result in execution. Higher courts may reduce the sentence to life imprisonment, acquit the accused, or otherwise set aside the conviction or sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Supreme Court did not confirm any death sentence during 2023\u20132025. Separating death-row prisoners from the general prison population is intended to prevent escapes, violence, intimidation, and other security risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prisoners on death row are kept under close supervision, and their cells may be searched regularly. Access to death-row areas is also restricted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, death row does not automatically mean solitary confinement. The Supreme Court has repeatedly emphasized that prisoners sentenced to death should not be kept in prolonged solitary confinement merely because they have received a death sentence. Yet imprisonment should not mean the complete denial of every opportunity for work, education, recreation, communication, and human contact. The repeated court proceedings, appeals, mercy petitions, and uncertainty about the future can create severe emotional stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long periods of isolation may contribute to anxiety, depression, hopelessness, sleep problems, and other mental-health difficulties. Prisoners on death row live under strict security while carrying the enormous psychological burden of a possible execution. In India, the number of people on death row remains significant, while actual executions are extremely rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real test of a justice system is not only how it punishes those convicted of serious crimes but also how it treats them while they remain in its custody.
