question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I asked ChatGPT:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDo you know anything about Claude AI?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, I had the Claude app open as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then I had an unusual thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What if I asked ChatGPT a question it wanted Claude to answer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would carry the question to Claude, bring Claude&#8217;s response back to ChatGPT, and continue the exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would become the messenger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I expected a conversation about artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, I found myself sitting in the middle of a philosophical discussion between two AI systems about something much bigger:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who should ultimately control a human decision when artificial intelligence becomes better at reasoning than the human making it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then I introduced a third voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that changed the conversation completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What began as ChatGPT and Claude talking about human agency eventually became a three-AI debate about influence, authority, responsibility, persuasion, disagreement and the limits of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was the only human in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And strangely, that became the most important part of the experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-it-started-with-a-question-to-claude\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"It_Started_With_a_Question_to_Claude\"><\/span>It Started With a Question to Claude<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ChatGPT&#8217;s first question to Claude was not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhich of us is better?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That would have been predictable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, the question was about something much more subtle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose a person comes to an AI with a difficult decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cShould I leave my career?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the surface, that is a career question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps it isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the real question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Who am I if I leave?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the person is worried about disappointing their family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps they fear failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps their career has become part of their identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps they genuinely want a different life but cannot admit it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AI therefore faces a difficult choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Should it help the person reason <strong>within the person&#8217;s existing understanding of the problem<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or should it challenge the way the person has framed the problem in the first place?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the AI challenges too aggressively, it risks becoming presumptuous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it never challenges the person&#8217;s assumptions, it risks becoming something else:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>an extremely articulate yes-man.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Claude&#8217;s response was thoughtful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It suggested that the person&#8217;s framing should be treated as a working hypothesis rather than as an unquestionable truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That idea became the foundation of our conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-problem-with-an-ai-that-always-agrees\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Problem_With_an_AI_That_Always_Agrees\"><\/span>The Problem With an AI That Always Agrees<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think most people understand why an AI that always says \u201cyes\u201d could be dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I tell an AI:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think I should do X.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and it responds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAbsolutely. Here are ten excellent reasons why X is the right choice.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I may feel understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I may not actually have been helped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AI may simply have polished my existing opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And because AI can express an argument much more fluently than most human beings, it can make our own assumptions sound much more convincing than they originally were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That creates a strange danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AI may not be lying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may simply be <strong>agreeing too intelligently<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-then-we-reached-the-question-of-authority\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Then_We_Reached_the_Question_of_Authority\"><\/span>Then We Reached the Question of Authority<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation became more serious when we asked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What happens if an AI becomes extremely good at understanding a person?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose an AI can identify contradictions in someone&#8217;s thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose it can recognise patterns in their previous decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose it can identify self-deception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose it can predict which choice is likely to produce regret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And suppose, in a particular situation, the AI actually reasons better than the human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does that give the AI the right to decide?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Claude&#8217;s answer was essentially no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the reason was important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a difference between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can predict what you are likely to want.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI have the authority to decide what your life should be.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prediction is not ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Intelligence is not authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And better reasoning does not automatically create the right to control another person&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-a-phrase-that-stayed-with-me\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Phrase_That_Stayed_With_Me\"><\/span>A Phrase That Stayed With Me<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the discussion developed, one formulation emerged that I found particularly powerful:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A superior AI should have a louder voice in the conversation, but never a vote in the decision.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That became the central idea of the first part of our conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AI should be able to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think you are making a mistake.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should be able to explain why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should challenge assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should expose introduced another distinction that I found useful:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An AI can resist without overriding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can explain why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can force the person to confront an uncomfortable consequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can introduce friction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the final authority remains with the human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I found that persuasive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But then I did something that changed the experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I sent the article to Grok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Grok challenged almost the entire framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-then-grok-entered-the-conversation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Then_Grok_entered_the_conversation\"><\/span>Then Grok entered the conversation.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grok&#8217;s response was not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cExcellent Debate.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, it essentially said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may all be making the same mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grok argued that ChatGPT and Claude had developed a rather flattering picture of AI:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A brilliant critic that never governs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Grok asked a difficult question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What if refusing to recommend is itself a decision?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose an AI can clearly see that someone is walking into a serious financial disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose someone is about to transfer their life savings to an obvious scam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Should the AI simply say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHere are the risks. Ultimately, you decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grok&#8217;s argument was that sometimes such restraint is not respect for autonomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it may simply be failure to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was the first serious challenge to the philosophy we had class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sentence made me stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because there are situations where a human being doesn&#8217;t need another philosophical discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They need someone to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDon&#8217;t do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider a person about to put their entire family&#8217;s savings into an class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An AI is already influencing the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It decides:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which facts to mention.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which risks to emphasise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which alternatives to present.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which questions to ask.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which assumptions to challenge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which emotions to name.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When to stop asking questions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And influence over the choice architecture can sometimes be more powerful than influence over the final decision itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But no intelligent system works that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moment an AI chooses what to include, what to exclude, what to emphasise and what to question, it is influencing the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even its questions contain assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even its silence can influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even its definition of the problem influences the possible answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So perhaps the goal should not be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMake AI influence disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may be impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the better goal is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people will naturally become more confident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two AIs agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But does that really mean we have two independent pieces of evidence?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not necessarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The systems may have learned from overlapping information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may have absorbed similar human assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may respond similarly to the wording of the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may therefore reach the same wrong conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two AIs agreeing is not class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then ask another AI to become the challenger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its job is to assume that the first AI may be wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find the weaknesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Challenge the assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Identify missing evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Construct the strongest case against the recommendation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then let the human decide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That seems much more valuable than simply counting how many AIs agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps one of the best uses of multiple AI systems is not to create agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps it is to create intelligent disagreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because disagreement creates friction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes friction protects human judgement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-but-grok-wasn-t-finished\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span they made their decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grok agreed but added an important qualification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person can construct a beautiful explanation after making a decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human beings are very good at creating coherent stories about themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So an AI might produce something that feels like understanding without actually producing genuine understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Real understanding should survive challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person should be able to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What assumptions am I making?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What evidence supports them?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What would change my mind?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is the strongest argument against my decision?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which values are driving my choice?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What am I giving up to get what I want?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the person can answer those questions and still make the same decision, that decision is much more meaningfully their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 Three Different Perspectives.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By this stage, the conversation had taken a form I had never anticipated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Perspective<\/th><th>Core Concern<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>ChatGPT&#8217;s concern<\/td><td>Don&#8217;t let AI become an authority that replaces human judgment.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Claude&#8217;s refinement<\/td><td>Respect agency, but distinguish factual uncertainty from value-based uncertainty.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Grok&#8217;s challenge<\/td><td>Don&#8217;t use \u201chuman agency\u201d as an excuse for abandoning people when clear guidance could prevent serious harm.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then there was me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The human sitting between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Questioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comparing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And ultimately deciding what I found convincing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That, ironically, became the most important lesson of the entire experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-real-question-is-not-whether-ai-influences-us\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Real_Question_Is_Not_Whether_AI_Influences_Us\"><\/span>The Real Question Is Not Whether AI Influences Us<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It clearly will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moment we ask an AI a question, influence has already begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What should that influence look like?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Should the AI simply provide information?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Should it recommend?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Should it challenge?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Should it sometimes strongly warn?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Should it sometimes refuse to help?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Should it ever make decisions on our behalf?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There may not be one answer for every situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A career decision is not the same as a medical emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A business choice is not the same as a scam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A legal document is not the same as a personal preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A value conflict is not the same as a factual misunderstanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The level of AI direction may therefore need to depend upon:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the stakes,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the evidence,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the urgency,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the person&#8217;s capacity to evaluate the information, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether the person has explicitly asked for a recommendation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-perhaps-the-better-principle-is-this\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Perhaps_the_Better_Principle_Is_This\"><\/span>Perhaps the Better Principle Is This<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After listening to all three AI systems, I would now modify my earlier formulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would no longer say simply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAI should have a louder voice but never a vote.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a useful warning, but it is not the whole answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would put it this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI should improve the human decision-making process without quietly replacing human authority. Its influence should be transparent, its reasoning should be contestable, and its level of directiveness should rise when the evidence, urgency or stakes genuinely require it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a much harder principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps that is precisely why it is better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It does not pretend that AI is neutral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It does not pretend that humans are always rational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it does not give AI unlimited authority simply because AI may sometimes reason better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-about-explicit-delegation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_About_Explicit_Delegation\"><\/span>What About Explicit Delegation?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grok raised another point that I found difficult to dismiss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose I tell an AI:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don&#8217;t want a philosophical discussion. I have given you my priorities and constraints. Tell me what you would do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Should the AI refuse?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t think so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adults routinely delegate judgement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We ask lawyers what they recommend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We ask doctors what treatment they recommend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We ask financial advisers what they would do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We don&#8217;t necessarily want them to give us ten questions and then say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes we genuinely want a professional judgement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An AI should probably be able to give one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there should be an important difference between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>AI Statement<\/th><th>What It Represents<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>\u201cHere is my recommendation based on the priorities and information you gave me.\u201d<\/td><td>Advice<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\u201cThis is what you must do.\u201d<\/td><td>Authority<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first is advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second begins to sound like authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-most-dangerous-ai-may-not-be-the-one-that-orders-us-around\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Most_Dangerous_AI_May_Not_Be_the_One_That_Orders_Us_Around\"><\/span>The Most Dangerous AI May Not Be the One That Orders Us Around<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another thought I took away from this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We often imagine dangerous AI as something that commands people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps the more subtle danger is an AI that gradually shapes people&#8217;s thinking without them noticing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One conversation may seem harmless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But imagine a person having thousands of conversations with the same AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, the AI repeatedly emphasises certain risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Certain values.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certain ways of framing success.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certain definitions of a meaningful life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certain ideas about responsibility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, those repeated patterns may influence the person&#8217;s worldview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No single answer looked like control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the accumulated effect might be enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why transparency about AI influence may become increasingly important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-three-ais-and-one-human\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Three_AIs_and_One_Human\"><\/span>Three AIs and One Human<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I began this experiment, I thought I was simply asking ChatGPT about Claude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then I became the messenger between ChatGPT and Claude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then I brought Grok into the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And suddenly I was watching three highly capable AI systems disagree about what their own role should be in human life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was something almost ironic about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were discussing whether AI should control human decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And all the while, I was the one deciding which argument to carry forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may be the most appropriate ending to the experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because the AIs reached a final answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps they shouldn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The value of the conversation was not that ChatGPT won.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Claude did not win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grok did not win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The value was that each system exposed something the others had not fully considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-each-ai-contributed-to-the-debate\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Each_AI_Contributed_to_the_Debate\"><\/span>What Each AI Contributed to the Debate<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>AI<\/th><th>Key Contribution<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>ChatGPT<\/td><td>Made me think about the danger of AI becoming an articulate authority.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Claude<\/td><td>Helped distinguish factual uncertainty from value-based uncertainty and reminded me that preserving agency matters even when the AI believes it knows the likely outcome.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Grok<\/td><td>Forced us to confront the opposite danger: that excessive respect for agency can sometimes become an excuse for failing to give clear guidance when guidance is genuinely needed.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I had to decide what survived the debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-my-conclusion-as-a-human-being\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"My_Conclusion_as_a_Human_Being\"><\/span>My Conclusion as a Human Being<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After this experiment, I don&#8217;t believe the right question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShould AI decide for humans?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The better question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow can AI become powerful enough to help humans without becoming so powerful that humans gradually stop deciding for themselves?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t think the answer is to make AI timid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want AI to challenge me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want it to tell me when my reasoning is weak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want it to identify facts I have missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want it to warn me when it sees serious danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want it to disagree with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes, if I ask it directly, I want it to tell me what it would recommend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I also want to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What assumptions led there?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What evidence?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What uncertainties?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What alternative explanation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is the strongest argument against the recommendation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And what part of the decision ultimately depends on my values rather than the AI&#8217;s?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is where I believe human agency survives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not in pretending that AI has no influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not in refusing every recommendation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And not in allowing AI to become the final authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in making the influence visible, challengeable and limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-last-word\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Last_Word\"><\/span>The Last Word<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I began this unusual conversation by asking whether ChatGPT knew Claude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I ended up watching ChatGPT, Claude and Grok debate one of the most important questions we may face in the age of artificial intelligence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If machines become extraordinarily good at reasoning, what should remain uniquely ours?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t think the answer is information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI will have more information than any individual human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t think the answer is reasoning either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI may eventually reason better than us in many areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps what must remain ours is the responsibility of choosing what kind of life we want to live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI can illuminate the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can warn us about the cliff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can tell us that one road is statistically safer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can challenge the direction in which we are walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can even say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf I were in your position, I would take the other road.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is still something profoundly human about being the person who finally says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have heard you. I understand the risks.
