What was once crude and easy to spot is now often indistinguishable from genuine recordings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For digital forensic examiners, police, and the courts, this is a major shift. The challenge is no longer only how to investigate a crime. It is also how to prove that the digital record of that crime is real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-synthetic-media\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Synthetic_Media\"><\/span>Synthetic Media<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Synthetic Media means any digital content (video, audio, image, or text) that is artificially created or heavily altered by artificial intelligence or computer algorithms, rather than being a real recording of actual events or people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-simple-breakdown\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Simple_Breakdown\"><\/span>Simple Breakdown<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cSynthetic\u201d = made or manufactured, not natural or original.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cMedia\u201d = videos, photos, voice recordings, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So synthetic media is content that looks or sounds real but was generated or manipulated by AI tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-common-examples\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Common_Examples\"><\/span>Common Examples<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Deepfake videos that make a person appear to say or do something they never did.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI-cloned voices that sound exactly like a real person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fully AI-generated images or videos of people, places, or events that never existed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heavily edited footage where faces, voices, or scenes have been replaced using AI.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Synthetic media (especially deepfakes) poses a serious challenge to evidence integrity because it can create false \u201cproof\u201d or allow real evidence to be dismissed as fake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-nature-of-the-threat\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Nature_of_the_Threat\"><\/span>The Nature of the Threat<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tools such as generative adversarial networks (GANs), diffusion models, and text-to-video systems have made synthetic media easy to create. Initiatives such as the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) embed tamper-evident cryptographic data into the recording device itself\u2014body-worn cameras, smartphones, and similar equipment.
