But under the surface, it\u2019s a festering ecosystem of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Over-sexualized animations masquerading as \u201cdance videos\u201d for kids<\/li>\n<li>Sadistic storylines where cartoon characters are tortured, killed, or violated<\/li>\n<li>Jump-scare horror clips slipped between rhymes and learning videos<\/li>\n<li>Self-harm content hidden in split-second frames<\/li>\n<li>Fake nursery rhymes with obscene lyrics and creepy visuals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This isn\u2019t rare. This isn\u2019t accidental. It\u2019s widespread and deliberate\u2014targeted manipulation of young minds by content creators gaming the algorithm.<\/p>\n<p>Videos like these have racked up millions of views before being flagged. In the time it takes YouTube to \u201cinvestigate,\u201d a child could be traumatized for life. There\u2019s no excuse for this anymore. So when Elsa is shown being murdered, or Peppa Pig is seen drinking bleach to \u201csolve a problem,\u201d what does that teach a child?<\/p>\n<p>Studies have already confirmed the damage:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Severe behavioural disorders<\/li>\n<li>Distorted perceptions of sexuality and violence<\/li>\n<li>Early exposure to explicit themes leading to premature sexual awareness<\/li>\n<li>Sleep disorders, nightmares, and chronic anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Aggression and difficulty with emotional regulation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And yet, YouTube Kids continues to operate with minimal oversight, while India\u2019s regulators wait for a national disaster to act.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Indian_Law_A_Paper_Tiger_in_the_Digital_Jungle\"><\/span>Indian Law: A Paper Tiger in the Digital Jungle<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Information_Technology_Act_2000\"><\/span>The Information Technology Act, 2000<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Sections 67, 67A, and 67B criminalize the publishing of obscene and sexually explicit material\u2014especially content that exploits children.<\/li>\n<li>Section 69A empowers the government to block content threatening public order or morality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And yet, YouTube Kids remains flooded with filth. Where\u2019s the enforcement? Where are the takedowns?<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"POCSO_Act_2012\"><\/span>POCSO Act, 2012<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Designed to protect minors from sexual exploitation, POCSO also covers digital sexual abuse. The law even penalizes platforms that allow children to be exposed to such content.<\/p>\n<p>But enforcement agencies rarely invoke POCSO unless the abuse is blatant and viral. What about the thousands of \u201csoft porn\u201d cartoons quietly brainwashing children daily? They go untouched.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Juvenile_Justice_Act_2015\"><\/span>Juvenile Justice Act, 2015<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This Act mandates the protection of children from neglect, cruelty, and psychological harm. That\u2019s exactly what disturbing digital content is doing.<\/p>\n<p>But no platform has been held accountable under it. No child protection agency has stepped up.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Indian_Penal_Code_Sections_292_293_505\"><\/span>Indian Penal Code Sections 292, 293, 505<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>These sections penalize the sale and distribution of obscene content, especially to minors. But in the online world, they\u2019re barely ever applied because our regulators don\u2019t treat YouTube as a \u201cdistributor\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Big Tech hides behind the \u201cwe\u2019re just a platform\u201d excuse, and the government lets them.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Are_We_So_Powerless_Because_We_Choose_to_Be\"><\/span>Why Are We So Powerless? Because We Choose to Be.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The biggest hurdle is jurisdiction. YouTube is an American company. Its algorithms, data centres, and policy teams are not based in India. Enforcement agencies here are still treating global tech platforms like VIP guests, not regulated entities.<\/p>\n<p>The IT Rules 2021 tried to put pressure on intermediaries but they\u2019re toothless without:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Immediate take-down powers<\/li>\n<li>Swift financial penalties<\/li>\n<li>Real-time monitoring of kids\u2019 content<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>YouTube continues to make billions in ad revenue off Indian audiences, while outsourcing the responsibility of child safety to tired parents and broken algorithms.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_the_Indian_Government_Must_Do_Now\"><\/span>What the Indian Government Must Do Now<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We are long past the point of policy papers and committee meetings. It\u2019s time for action. Bold, aggressive, unapologetic action.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Enforce_Human_Moderation_for_Kids_Platforms\"><\/span>Enforce Human Moderation for Kids\u2019 Platforms<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Make it mandatory for platforms offering child-specific content in India to have real, human moderators stationed in India\u2014not outsourced AI filters that routinely fail.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Enact_the_Childrens_Digital_Protection_Law\"><\/span>Enact the Children\u2019s Digital Protection Law<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We need a new law\u2014powerful, uncompromising, and directly focused on protecting minors in the digital space. This law must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Penalise platforms that host harmful content<\/li>\n<li>Criminalise the use of algorithms that promote such videos<\/li>\n<li>Establish a real-time redressal system for digital child abuse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Create_a_Dedicated_Child_Online_Safety_Authority\"><\/span>Create a Dedicated Child Online Safety Authority<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Set up a watchdog body with enforcement power over platforms like YouTube Kids. Give it the power to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Investigate<\/li>\n<li>Block<\/li>\n<li>Fine<\/li>\n<li>Prosecute<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Launch_a_Nationwide_Awareness_Campaign\"><\/span>Launch a Nationwide Awareness Campaign<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Parents are not helpless\u2014but they are misled. It\u2019s time for a full-blown public information campaign about the dangers of unsupervised screen time.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Parents_You_Have_a_Role_Too\"><\/span>Parents: You Have a Role Too<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Stop assuming that an app labeled \u201cfor kids\u201d is safe. Watch what your children are watching. Turn off autoplay. Check watch history. Report filth. Stay involved.<\/p>\n<p>And most importantly, raise your voice.
