While DNA analysis and certain chemical tests are highly accurate, other techniques\u2014like bite-mark analysis or hair comparison\u2014have been criticized for their subjectivity and potential for error. Moreover, contamination, cognitive bias, and misinterpretation can undermine even robust methodologies. Consequently, forensic evidence should be viewed as a powerful but fallible tool, requiring careful validation, proper procedural safeguards, and corroboration with other investigative findings to ensure that it supports justice rather than inadvertently contributing to wrongful convictions.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Short_History_of_Forensic_Science\"><\/span>A Short History of Forensic Science<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In the 1800s, stories like Sherlock Holmes made forensic science popular.<\/li>\n<li>Over time, police started using science to solve crimes.<\/li>\n<li>In 2009, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences said many forensic methods were not tested well enough and could lead to mistakes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Problems_With_Hair_Analysis\"><\/span>Problems With Hair Analysis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Hair analysis was once used to match suspects to crime scenes. But it turned out to be very unreliable. DNA later proved the hair wasn\u2019t his.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kirk Odom:<\/strong> Served 22 years. DNA showed he was innocent.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Donald Gates:<\/strong> Spent 27 years behind bars. DNA cleared his name.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These people lost decades of their lives because of bad science.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bloodstain_Pattern_Analysis_BPA\"><\/span>Bloodstain Pattern Analysis (BPA)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>BPA looks at how blood lands on surfaces to guess what happened during a crime. Some methods are strong, like DNA testing.
