Kelly Herron: The Runner Who Refused to Be a Victim

March 5, 2017, began as an ordinary day for Kelly Herron, a 36-year-old runner embarking on a 10-mile training run through Seattle's picturesque Golden Gardens Park. The crisp air and scenic views offered the familiar solace and invigoration that runners often find in their rhythm and the surrounding environment. Four miles into her planned route, nature called, and Herron made a routine stop at a public restroom within the park. Little did she know, this momentary pause would thrust her into a terrifying struggle for survival, a battle she would ultimately win through sheer will, quick thinking, and the empowering lessons of a recent self-defence class.

As Herron was drying her hands, a man launched a sudden and brutal attack. Gary Steiner, a registered sex offender who had been lurking in the vicinity, targeted Herron with predatory intent. He went for her knees, attempting to bring her down and establish control. But Herron was not a woman to succumb without a fight. In that critical moment, instinct and the recent knowledge she had acquired kicked in. Just three weeks prior, Herron had attended a self-defence class, a proactive step towards personal safety that would prove to be her lifeline. The core tenets of that class – trust your intuition, respond immediately, be loud and fight hard, and connect hard bones to soft spots – flashed through her mind.

Herron reacted instantly and with fierce determination. She began yelling with all her might, her voice echoing through the restroom, "Not today, m-----f-----!!" This defiant roar was not just an expression of fear and anger; it was a strategic move, a primal scream intended to startle her attacker, alert anyone nearby, and assert her refusal to be a passive victim. Simultaneously, she put her self-defence training into action. As Steiner continued his assault, attempting to overpower her within the confined space of the restroom stall, Herron fought back with every ounce of strength she possessed.

Cornered within the stall, with Steiner striking her head, Herron focused on the principles she had learned. She scratched his face, using her fingernails as weapons, aiming for vulnerable areas. This aggressive counterattack likely surprised Steiner, disrupting his plan and buying Herron precious moments. Recognizing the direness of her situation, Herron's mind raced for an escape. In a stroke of quick thinking and resourcefulness, she noticed a carabiner clip, a metal loop with a spring-loaded gate often used by climbers or for attaching items, which had been dropped or left behind by another park visitor. Seizing this unexpected tool, Herron barricaded herself within the bathroom stall, creating a physical barrier between herself and her attacker.

With the stall providing a temporary shield, Herron knew she needed immediate help. She desperately called out to another person who happened to be in the vicinity of the restroom, her voice undoubtedly strained with fear and urgency, pleading for them to call 911. Her cries for help were answered, and the wheels of emergency response were set in motion.
Meanwhile, Gary Steiner, thwarted by Herron's fierce resistance and the barricaded stall, remained in the restroom until the police arrived. When confronted by law enforcement, Steiner pleaded guilty to second-degree assault with sexual motivation. His admission of guilt led to the maximum sentence of three years in prison, a consequence of his violent and predatory actions.

The aftermath of this harrowing experience could have understandably led Herron to retreat and live in fear. However, her response was one of remarkable resilience and a powerful desire to empower others. Instead of succumbing to victimhood, Kelly Herron chose to channel her trauma into advocacy and action. She partnered with Fighting Chance Seattle, the very organization where she had taken the self-defence class that had played a crucial role in her survival. Together, they began offering self-defence classes specifically geared towards runners, sharing the vital techniques and mindset that had enabled Herron to fight back and escape.

Herron's story quickly gained national attention, not only for the terrifying nature of the attack but also for her incredible bravery and her inspiring decision to turn her ordeal into an opportunity to educate and empower other women. Her defiant yell, "Not today, m-----f-----!" became a rallying cry for self-defence and a symbol of resistance against predatory violence. Her willingness to share her story, the raw vulnerability coupled with her unwavering strength, resonated deeply with countless individuals.

The incident served as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that can lurk even in seemingly safe public spaces and the importance of personal safety awareness and self-defence skills. Herron's proactive decision to take a self-defence class, even before the attack occurred, undoubtedly increased her chances of survival. Her immediate and forceful response, her loud vocalization, and her ability to utilize available resources in a crisis situation highlighted the effectiveness of such training.

Kelly Herron's legacy extends far beyond her personal survival. She became an advocate for women's safety, tirelessly sharing her experience and encouraging others to prioritize self-defence education. Through her work with Fighting Chance Seattle, she has empowered numerous runners and other individuals with the skills and confidence to protect themselves.

Her story is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit, the importance of preparedness, and the inspiring ability to transform personal trauma into a force for positive change. Kelly Herron's courageous fight in that Golden Gardens Park restroom serves as an enduring message: when faced with danger, resistance, both physical and vocal, can be the key to survival. Her unwavering spirit continues to inspire and empower, ensuring that her terrifying experience serves as a catalyst for greater awareness and proactive self-protection.
