The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in elections has long been described as a breakthrough, given its deep impact on the accuracy and fairness of voting across nations. Instances where gory AI-based technology has resulted in very realistic forgeries have occurred. These range from forged videos to phony news stories. Information in the form of AI-generated misinformation can influence the electorate, leading to deception, control of public opinion, and even the subversion of the democratic process.

The discovery of this AI-generated fake news spread false information using media sources like social platforms has become a cause for concern lately. Thus, such misleading activity might be aimed at a certain group of the population, take advantage of societal differences, and have an impact on the ways people vote, which is obviously a real threat to electoral justice and credibility.

To solve this issue, it is important to follow a combined strategy that will involve partnerships between governments, tech companies, and civil society. It is imperative for governments to pass laws on AI use in disseminating falsehoods and to create surveillance and preventive methods during election times.

Nevertheless, no matter what type of regulation is chosen, it is vital for governments to prioritize combating AI-driven disinformation, starting with an advanced and comprehensive strategy. To alleviate the negative effects of AI-generated misinformation on society and ensure democratic principles are not undermined, policymakers should facilitate collaboration between all parties, utilize emerging technologies, and encourage media literacy campaigns.

In the face of governments showing little concern towards addressing information warfare, it may not be sufficient as artificial intelligence (AI) progresses. To effectively protect democratic elections and uphold the welfare of the public, a proactive approach like the one seen in Europe must be adopted.
