Abstract This article recounts the severe inadequacy of the country’s Consumer Protection Act, 2019 (CPA 2019), with respect to a variety of novel harms occasioned by Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, which are being adopted into Indian consumer markets. Given AI’s intangible presence, ability to continuously re-learn, and multi-staged production chain engaged with multiple stakeholders, the traditional concepts of product liability, product, defect, and manufacturer have major limitations.
