Court Marriage Registration in Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai under the Special Marriage Act
Why is it Called Court Marriage?
In earlier times, marriage registration offices in Mumbai and Thane were located within or near court buildings. For example, the Bombay Small Causes Court in Bandra had its registration office on the ground floor. Because citizens visited the court premises to register their marriages, the process came to be popularly known as court marriage registration—for instance, Bandra Court Marriage Registration.
Today, the same process can also be completed conveniently through the official online court marriage registration portal, making it faster and simpler.
Intercaste Marriage Registration
Court marriage under the Special Marriage Act is particularly suitable for intercaste or interfaith couples. Unlike traditional religious ceremonies, this process allows both partners to marry without converting religion. This minimizes family or social disputes and encourages mutual respect. For couples from different religions or castes, intercaste registered marriage provides a legally strong and neutral option.
NRI Marriage Registration
Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) can also register their marriage in Mumbai under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, provided they stay in India for at least 30 days before applying. NRIs need to present a valid passport as proof of residence. Many opt for registration before their wedding celebrations, which allows them to plan a destination-style ceremony afterward.
Christian Marriage Registration
Christian couples can also use the online marriage registration facility under the Special Marriage Act. The process is the same as for other citizens, and the marriage certificate can be obtained online after registration.
The Special Marriage Act, 1954
This Act allows marriage between any two individuals (including interfaith and intercaste marriages) without requiring conversion. It applies irrespective of caste, religion, or nationality. Even Indians living abroad can use this Act to solemnize their marriage.

Neither party should have a living spouse.
-
Both must be mentally sound.
-
Male must be at least 21 years old, and female at least 18.

Court marriage under this Act is also referred to as civil marriage by registration.
