Got married in India. Getting a divorce in United States
« on: October 16, 2013, 07:18:50 PM »
We were married for 2 years. Both of us live in NJ. We do not have kids or common property. Since both of us live in US and have never lived together in India, we filed for a divorce in New Jersey. The engagement and wedding expenses were paid completely by my family (over 25 lakhs).  I was hoping that my husband would be willing to reimburse 50% of the wedding expenses. But he refused to pay anything.

When I consulted my US attorney, she mentioned that since the wedding was conducted by my family in India, my parents could file a civil suit against him/his family to get the wedding expenses reimbursed. I would like to know if that is possible? What is the process for that? Can I ask my parents to file a civil suit after my divorce has been finalized in US?

what kind of divorce are u going through, is it mutual or contested.
secondly you are entitled to Streedhan thats it expenses in a wedding is done willfully not by force.
hence demand for the same will not be entertained, how would you establish that 25 lakhs has been stent in the wedding.

just say 25 lakhs is not enough you have to show hard facts.

you have a right over streedan, wedding expenses don't fall under this ambit, hence won't have much impact
