Family using force and blackmail to take anti depressants
« on: September 01, 2015, 02:27:44 PM »

I am a 32 year old person working as a software engineer.

I have strained relationship with my dominating parents since many years. I have had troubled relationship since childhood and in my teenage my father has forced me to take psychological medication after getting prescription from his doctor friend as he felt I had anxiety. I had been against such treatment which I felt had been unnecessary however had to agree as I was a minor at that time.

Now after a decade he wishes me to marry a girl of his choice only. Since I am averse to being forced into such a marriage he is spreading the opinion in family and friends that I suffer from commitment phobia and need medication. He wishes to force me to take psychological medication and also label me as a mad person in society. He shows decade old prescriptions to people to convince them that I have a history of such illness and he is right in his opinion that I should be on severe drugs.

He feels that enforcing medication on a person is a good way to curb his independence or rebellious nature as these drugs work as sedatives. I would like to know if he could use police/law help inorder to force me to mental asylum under the pretext of required treatment. He is threatening with such actions.

Does he have any power under the indian legal system as a parent to enforce

psychiatric treatment on me against my will.

thank you

You can give a public notification in news paper that you have severed all ties with your parents

Thank you for your reply.

Your suggestion was to give notification in a newspaper with effect that I have severed all ties with my parents.
I would also like to know if instead of public notification would it also work if I could first request them if they could sign on a affidavit that they have no complaints regarding my mental health and that I am not a threat to society and family members. Also that in the future they have no interest in interfering with my personal health decisions or creating pressure of any form for forced medication.

Awaiting eagerly your reply. I am at present out of country and your opinion is extremely important as I am unable to contact a lawyer in person.

Regards,

Dear Sir,

If your parents is ready to give such affidavit as suggested by you then it may also solve your problems. But under no circumstances, you should force yourself to take these medicines as suggested by your father at any point of time. As i understand, you are self dependent and earning well, in such case, you may also take separate residence and start a separate life from your father. This may also solve your problems rather than filing some or other case against your own parents. Certainly if nothing works out then you are left with no other option but to file some or other case against your parents.
